Student Volunteering

From our youngest preschool students in HATS to our high school seniors in Upper School, our entire student body and faculty believe in the value of community service, both to our school and to the greater communities in which we live.

We hold an annual Community Service Day in which our students provide service to the community according to their age group and abilities. Early Childhood students have prepared care packages for an orphanage in Iraq. Elementary school students in our Lower School division have knotted blankets for area homeless shelters and decorated pumpkins for nursing homes. Middle School students have provided games and entertained residents at retirement communities. Upper School students have cleaned up parks, worked in shelters and community centers, and helped with Habitat for Humanity.

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, we are excited to incorporate the IB Diploma program’s community service component in our Upper School. Called “Creativity, Action, Service,” or CAS, this component is designed to involve students in new roles. The emphasis is on learning by doing real tasks that have real consequences and reflecting on these experiences over time.  Our Upper School students perform at least 60 hours per year of community service over the course of their high-school career.
