Development Associate

Harrisburg Academy, an independent preschool through college preparatory day school located in Wormleysburg, Pennsylvania, seeks a personable, organized, and results-oriented individual to provide support for the school’s Development and Alumni Relations Office.


Position Summary:

The development associate is responsible for identifying, cultivating, and securing gifts and grants from individuals and foundations for Harrisburg Academy.  This individual will build and maintain a portfolio of primarily alumni, alumni parents, and current parents with the capacity to make gifts, grants or pledges to achieve an assigned fundraising goal.


Reporting to the director of development and alumni relations, the development associate is a member of the Harrisburg Academy annual giving team.  This individual is an integral member of the campaign office and actively partners with members of the development team and faculty to execute the vision and strategy of Bold Ambition: The Campaign for Harrisburg Academy, the Academy’s current comprehensive campaign.


The position is a full-time, 12-month staff appointment.


Key responsibilities:

  • Assist the associate director of development and alumni relations to solicit and steward gifts for the annual fund, special events, capital campaign, planned giving, and John Harris Circle leadership giving society with a focus on alumni and parents of alumni
  • Utilize Blackbaud tools to process gifts and prepare acknowledgment letters and other correspondence
  • Conduct prospective donor research
  • Manage and maintain Raiser’s Edge database
  • Update alumni mailing address and email addresses in Raiser’s Edge
  • Research, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of gifts from select parents, alumni, and affiliates
  • Create and maintain solicitation schedule, track and analyze results, communicate progress to solicitors, and produce status reports
  • Strengthen the Academy’s alumni network through direct contact and increased social media presence
  • Help build strong relationships within the school community and engage new parent volunteers
  • Provide ongoing support for the Academy’s annual fundraising events, including the Fall Benefit, annual Spring Gala, and Parents Association-sponsored events
  • Contribute content to the Alumni Explorer eNewsletter
  • Lead Grandparents’ Day, John Harris Circle leadership event, and Alumni Weekend to continue stewarding those relationships
  • Draft professional solicitation and thank you letters
  • Generate mailing lists, mail merge, and print documents for mailings
  • Track and send appropriate tax documentation to donors

Minimum Education and Experience: 

  • A bachelor's degree in non-profit management or related discipline or a combination of education and equivalent experience
  • Three years of experience in development and special event planning
  • Demonstrated ability to work in complex organizations and meet deadlines and goals for multiple highly visible projects and priorities
  • Proven capacity to build a donor pipeline and develop and execute well thought out strategies and plans for donor cultivation and solicitation
  • Ability to succeed in an entrepreneurial fundraising environment where initiative, drive, creativity, and ingenuity are required
  • Demonstrated success working both independently and collaboratively with other team members in managing multiple projects and priorities
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen and interact effectively with donors and high-level volunteers

Physical Education (PE) Teacher

Harrisburg Academy is a preschool through 12th grade college preparatory day school with the International Baccalaureate Diploma program as the capstone of the Upper School experience.

Harrisburg Academy is seeking a 0.7 – 0.8 FTE (benefits included) K-12 PE teacher for the 2017-18 academic year.  The successful candidate will be filling in for a faculty member who is on a modified two-year leave of absence.  This person will be expected to coach one or more sports as well, which includes an additional stipend.  Pending the qualifications of the successful candidate, this person may also teach one or more sessions of health for additional compensation.  Successful candidates will have at minimum a bachelor’s degree and at least two years’ experience working with young children.

ESL Teacher (Part-time)

Harrisburg Academy is seeking a part-time ESL teacher to support its international student enrollment in 8th through 12th grade.  Hours would begin mid-August, about three hours per day, for two weeks.  Hours would then be reduced based upon curricular needs, but potentially 3-5 hours per week.  Students would also have the option to contract directly for private tutoring which could be offered (in some cases) during the school day; in other cases, off-campus after school hours.  There could also be an option for a Saturday class on a semi-regular basis if necessary or desired.  In most cases, these classes would be for 5-10 students.

Early Childhood Teacher's Assistant (Kindergarten Classroom)

Looking for a qualified person with high energy who loves working with young children.  Position would involve assisting the lead teacher with all classroom activities and classroom management.  The candidate should feel comfortable leading learning activities and communicating with parents.  Candidate must have education and/or experience working with the early childhood age level.  Co-curricular interest in the arts and athletics is highly desirable.  Email cover letters and resume by Monday, June 5, 2017 to



After-School Staff

Harrisburg Academy is currently accepting applications for both areas of our part-time after-school program (Early Childhood/Lower School-aged students and Middle School/Upper School-aged students).  We are seeking individuals who have a love of working with children. The position requires good communication skills, a sense of creativity and enthusiasm, the ability to plan and implement age-appropriate activities, and the skills to work well with parents and community members. Applicants need to be at least 18 years old, are required to pass a full background check, and must be able to adhere to the school's dress code policy. Extended Day Program (EDP)—late August to early June, 2:30-6 p.m., plus special days

Located on campus, the Extended Day Program is a blend of recreational and enrichment activities based around a series of themes. Teachers / counselors who love working with children, demonstrate creativity, enthusiasm, responsibility, and friendliness.  The Extended Day Program helps preschool through elementary school-age students develop both socially and physically through organized recreation and positive encouragement.  We provide a variety of structured and free-choice activities that promote individual and social development.  Daily favorites include crafts, games, and reading, as well as inside and outside play.  Please note that the EDP team also offers child care from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on days when classes are not in session (such as faculty in-service days, parent-teacher conferences, and some school breaks). 

After School Study Clubs—late August to early June, 2:30-6 p.m.

Study hall monitors ensure a safe, studious environment for our Middle School and Upper School Study Clubs (5th through 12th grades). 


Essential Functions for After-School Staff Members:
•    Supervise, monitor, and assist children ranging from 3 to 18 years old as they participate in a wide variety of after-school activities, both inside and outside
•    Organize and lead both large- and small-group games and activities that are age-appropriate
•    Clearly communicate and collaborate with all co-workers, parents, and participants
•    Maintain a consistent environment, which includes working as scheduled (flexible schedules are available during program hours)



Summer Day Camp Counselor—early-June to mid-August 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

An all-day version of our Extended Day Program with added summer activities, including pool time and field trips.

Academic Support Teacher

Harrisburg Academy is searching for a qualified person with high-energy and interested in and capable of administering informal and formal student assessment; remediation of student needs; consultation, collaboration, and training with and for faculty and staff; establishing and maintaining partnerships with families; and documentation and reporting of student progress.

•    Degree in special education with a focus on reading and math preferred
•    Knowledge of and experience in administering a variety of assessment tools and methodologies
•    Experience in working with individual students and small groups on short term remediation of specific student needs
•    Experience in collaborating and consulting with faculty and staff
•    Experience in establishing and maintaining strong working partnerships with families
•    Excellent communication skills
•    Experience in developing and implementing professional development training for faculty and staff preferred
