Administrator Positions

Director of Development and Alumni Relations

Harrisburg Academy, a preschool through 12th grade coeducational, college preparatory day school of 400 students, seeks an experienced, results-oriented, and collaborative senior fund-raising professional to join our development team as Director of Development and Alumni Relations. This full-time position is available April 1, 2017.

The director serves as the chief development officer of Harrisburg Academy and is a highly visible member of the administrative leadership team reporting directly to the head of school. The director is responsible for researching, planning, managing, implementing, benchmarking, and leading fundraising activities to secure major gifts for endowment and capital purposes, the annual fund, special events, alumni relations, stewardship activities, and internal/external communications regarding these initiatives.  The annual average of major gifts and annual fund contributions secured is $400K and $300K, respectively.

The director will provide entrepreneurial leadership and strategic direction in a wide range of activities, including parent and alumni relations, publications, and communications. The director will nurture long-term philanthropic relationships with members of all constituencies on behalf of the Academy, focusing particularly on the annual fund and cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gift donations. The director will also manage and actively participate as a member of a task force dedicated to securing Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) scholarship funding.

Currently, Harrisburg Academy is in the process of completing its Bold Ambition campaign — a comprehensive campaign dedicated to raising $5.5 million for renovations and new construction, $1.5 million to expand our endowment resources, and another $1.5 million to lift our annual Academy Fund levels of giving to new heights.  To date, we have completed the first two phases of the campaign. The director will be central to this extensive effort, working with leadership, managing volunteers, liaising with campaign counsel, and soliciting major gifts.

The director supervises the Development and Alumni Relations Office professional staff and will serve as primary contact with the Executive Alumni Board and the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees. The director’s efforts should be guided by a commitment to the NAIS Principles of Good Practice.

The following responsibilities for the director of development include but are not limited:

  • To devise and manage a program designed to attract the maximum gift support possible to the institution. This program will include annual fund solicitation; planned giving programs; corporate and foundation proposals; and planning for major capital and endowment gifts and planning/implementation for the remainder of the Academy’s Bold Ambition campaign.
  • To further develop and coordinate all aspects of the Bold Ambition campaign and ongoing efforts, including expansion of The John Harris Circle, a philanthropic society for leadership giving.
  • To work collaboratively as a member of the internal Advancement team with the director of enrollment management and marketing, and director of communications, to successfully promote a coordinated advancement strategy for Harrisburg Academy.
  • To create a coordinated development and alumni-related publications program which will most effectively communicate with various constituencies.
  • To develop a complete program of research into and an action plan of solicitation of the school's key prospects.
  • To serve as staff support for the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees and Board of the Harrisburg Academy Foundation.

This is an excellent time to join a thriving and dynamic school with stable and energetic leadership.  Current parents and Academy alumni are very pleased thus far with the success of the Bold Ambition campaign. The results have produced renovated facilities, new construction, additional endowment resources, and a successful John Harris Circle. The leadership of Harrisburg Academy is prepared to forge ahead and achieve similar success.

The near future is a time to broaden our efforts and set the standard for new ambitions in program growth and educational enhancement for all students. Harrisburg Academy welcomes and celebrates children, families, faculty, and staff that reflect the broad range of diversity in Central Pennsylvania.
