Harrisburg Academy Student Named National Merit Scholarship Finalist

James T NMSPWORMLEYSBURG, PA – James T. ’17 has been recognized as a Finalist in the 2017 National Merit® Scholarship Program (NMSP).  NMSP honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.  The 16,000 Finalists were chosen from the original pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of United States high school seniors.  These academically talented Finalists, including James, are now in the running for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth $32 million that will be offered this spring.  Read more...

Senior Eyes a Career in Vet Medicine

Molly Teen of the WeekMolly M. '17 can honestly say she has yet to be smitten by an Adonis.  But she has been bitten by one, and that experience reinforced her desire to pursue a passion that has been part of her life since childhood.  “My dad had rescued a green iguana and it got itself stuck in a milk crate,” recalled Molly, 17, a senior at Harrisburg Academy who aspires to be a veterinarian.  “I felt bad for him,” she said. “So I decided I was the one who was going to rescue this luckless lizard.”  Read more...

Op-Ed: Here's How Technology is Making Pearl Harbor Come to Life for the Next Generation

This past summer, I had the amazing opportunity to spend a week at The National World War II Museum in New Orleans with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.  One of the highlights was meeting veterans each day, who urged everyone they met, including me, to learn about the war, the sacrifices paid, and to keep their stories alive for future generations.  It was an important message that I vowed to share with my students.  Not all teachers and students can easily travel to New Orleans, though. Harrisburg Academy Student Blends Technology with Musical Creativity

Like the career path he wants to enter, James T. '17 is wired for endless possibilities.  “It’s constantly changing ... constantly evolving,” the senior at Harrisburg Academy said of the related fields of electrical engineering, computer programming, and robotics.  “It’s a very dynamic world,” he added. “I want to be a part of the future of that technology. I want to have an influence on how that technology goes.”  Born in Harrisburg, 17-year-old James got his start in computers in the fifth or sixth grade by way of his father who owns an information technology business on the West Shore.  Read more...

Harrisburg Academy’s Entire 8th Grade Awarded Trip to National WWII Museum in New Orleans
WORMLEYSBURG, PA – The 32 members of Harrisburg Academy’s 8th grade class — unbeknownst to them and the rest of the Academy community until Friday’s special live announcement — will be traveling to New Orleans in April through a $16,500 grant secured by their history teacher, Lindsay Bowman.  Of the 100-plus applications submitted to DSF Charitable Foundation (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) in September, only two schools in North America were chosen to receive the grant.  Harrisburg Academy is one of the two.  Read more...

MEDIA ADVISORY: Harrisburg Academy to Celebrate New Music Suite at Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Singing A New Tune: Harrisburg Academy's Music Suite Construction is Complete!

Music SuiteWORMLEYSBURG, PA – Summer of 2016 brought the tune of heavy equipment on the easternmost side of Harrisburg Academy’s campus, but nothing but sweet music will be heard there from now on.  Last week, the Academy officially opened the freshly painted doors of its new music suite, funded through Bold Ambition: The Campaign for Harrisburg Academy.  The music suite is a 3,200-square-foot area that includes two rooms for class instruction, four individual practice rooms, storage for instruments, and a lobby area for parents to wait for children participating in after-school music lessons.  Read more...

Thirteen Harrisburg Academy Class of 2016 Grads Add to their Success with IB Diploma

WORMLEYSBURG, PA – Harrisburg Academy is proud to recognize its 13 recent graduates who received an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma this summer.  The success of the Class of 2016 brings Harrisburg Academy’s total IB Diplomas earned to 68 (in eight years).  Harrisburg Academy’s pass rate in 2016 was a staggering 93 percent — far surpassing the worldwide average pass rate of 80.79 percent according to data from the most recent IB annual review and IB Diploma Programme Statistical Bulletin.  The Academy’s average grade and points score for students who pursued the Diploma and passed also continue to measure higher than worldwide averages.  Read more...
