The Academy’s athletics program is an essential part of its students’ education.  Athletics foster the development of character, lifetime wellness skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, integrity, and a sense of fairness and respect.  Athletes work together toward a common purpose and a collective sense of achievement, and benefits of this experience extend beyond the final score of any contest.

The values inherent in the Academy’s athletics program support and are consistent with the mission and core values of our school community, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), and independent schools at large.

Program Goals

Build Character To acquire and enhance skills of leadership, responsibility, discipline, time management, perseverance, honesty, and fairness: qualities that are necessary in pursuit of success.

Provide a Dynamic Experience To develop lifetime friendships while playing on a team and developing a deep appreciation for a sport.  In addition to classroom learning, we believe students learn valuable lifetime skills that challenge them to grow intellectually and emotionally while playing on a team.  Through the athletics journey, students learn to collaborate with their coach and teammates, experience the thrill of victories, and accept defeat with grace and humility.

Demonstrate Strong Outcomes To compete at the highest level of competition through team and individual sports to reach personal achievement not previously acquired. Through competition, student-athletes gain the confidence and skills required to compete at a higher level if desired.  In addition, experience through participation allows student-athletes to develop and appreciate a love for lifetime fitness through adulthood.

Who is the Academy Student-Athlete?

Harrisburg Academy supports a no-cut policy in its athletics programs. We encourage all students in middle and high school (6th-12th grade) to play at least one interscholastic sport –– and in fact, more than 70 percent of our students do. Academy students often play multiple sports while maintaining a challenging academic schedule and participating in other co-curricular activities. In addition, several cooperative agreements exist -- between Trinity High School, Cedar Cliff High School, and West Shore Christian Academy (WSCA) -- to provide additional sports opportunities for Academy students.  Academy athletes are invited to play on Trinity’s Football, Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse, Baseball, Softball, and Track and Field teams.  They are able to play Girls’ Field Hockey through Cedar Cliff High School (West Shore School District).  Finally, cross country athletes participate with WSCA's team.

Sports By the Seasons

Fall is a busy time for Academy athletes. The MS Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer teams play on the Upper Field while the Varsity Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer teams meet opponents on John Crain Kunkel Field. Our Varsity Girls’ Tennis team plays on the adjacent tennis courts.  These teams compete against other schools in Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) District III.  During the winter, Louis Lehrman Gymnasium hosts our Middle School, Junior Varsity, and Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams, competing against area schools in PIAA District III. Students in 9th through 12th grade also participate in PIAA Varsity Swimming.  The  spring sports season finds our athletes busy again, this time with Varsity Boys’ Tennis, who compete in PIAA District III, and also spring Youth Lacrosse (U13, grades 4-6) and spring Middle School Lacrosse (U15, grades 7-9).

Club Sports

The Academy also offers club sports: fall and spring Youth Swimming (grades K-8); the newly formed fall Fencing Club; and our spring Middle School Running Club (grades 5-8).

Celebrating Academy Athletics

Each year, a committee chooses up to four new members for the Athletics Hall of Fame based on nominations from Academy alumni and friends. The Hall of Fame recognizes the outstanding achievements of former students, coaches, teams, and friends of our Central Pennsylvania top private school.  Click here for more information.
