Our plans for new construction include building a new wing of classrooms for our Early Childhood program. The new Early Childhood Center will include classrooms for our preschool, Junior Kindergarten, and Kindergarten students, in addition to common and administrative space.
New construction of a 3,200-square-foot music suite, complete with two large instruction rooms, smaller practice rooms, and instrument storage, was completed as part of the campaign during summer of 2016. It supplements current space in McCormick Auditorium and the Albert and Marie Herbert Band Room.
Renovation of the five Middle and Upper School science labs, completed during the summer of 2014, was the first capital project of the campaign. The kick-off of the public phase of Bold Ambition: The Campaign for Harrisburg Academy was official as of Jan. 15, 2015, and the Board of Trustees approved Phase II, the Performing Arts phase, on March 3, 2015. Part 1 of this three-part phase saw the renovation during summer of 2015 of the foyer adjacent McCormick Auditorium and the hallway leading to the band room, and construction of a new hallway that now connects to the new music suite. Next up is the completion of the third and final Performing Arts phase renovations -- new lockers, lighting, and flooring in the Middle and Upper School hallway.
After this will be new construction of the Early Childhood Center. After this is completed, we will renovate the current Early Childhood classroom space to be repurposed for the Lower School program. This renovation will allow us to expand the size of the Lower School classrooms and provide space for a new Lower-School designated science lab, library, and conference room.
The campus-wide facilities master plan completed in 2012 identified upgrades necessary during the next 10 years to support the best teaching and learning for our current and future students. Harrisburg Academy is the educational leader in Central Pennsylvania, and we want to ensure that our physical space continues to support the highest standard of education in this region, providing each and every student with the “Academy Advantage.”
As is our current practice, five percent of the Academy’s endowment resources will be used to augment annual operations, including academic programs such as the Centers for Experiential Learning & Innovation, curricular programs, faculty salaries, student scholarships, and special programs supported by endowment donors. Increasing our endowment by $1.5 million will allow the Academy's Board of Trustees and administration to dedicate more supplemental resources to annual operations.
The non-tuition revenue raised by the annual Academy Fund supplies important funds to the Academy’s annual operations. During the 2014 fiscal year, 100 percent of Academy faculty, staff, and trustees, and 60 percent of current parents contributed to the Academy Fund, 26 percent more participation than at comparable independent schools. In addition, the Academy Fund is supported by The John Harris Circle, which is made up of Academy parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and local corporations and foundations who commit to investing $1,000 or more annually for five consecutive years. By dedicating one portion of the Bold Ambition campaign to increasing contributions to the Academy Fund, Academy community members can invest in a vibrant and successful future for our school.
The Academy’s Board of Trustees and administration have been bold, yet practical, in their design of the new campaign. For example, prior to beginning any new construction or renovation, 70 percent of the cost of the total project must either have been collected or pledged as future gifts. The total indebtedness of the Academy is small and the school’s leadership does not want to encumber current or future operations with unnecessary debt payments.
No, pledges can be paid over the course of five years either in cash or by transfer of stock. For more details about contributing to the Bold Ambition campaign, please contact Beth Zak in the Development Office by phone at 717-763-7811 ext. 1396 or by email.
Certainly. Numerous current families, alumni, local corporations and foundations, and other friends of the Academy have already taken this step in contributing to different areas of the campaign. These donors have increased their commitment to the Academy Fund by joining The John Harris Circle while also contributing to the school’s endowment or the capital construction portion of the campaign.
