There are so many things that can cause little ones to throw up. From coughing too hard or too long, eating too much or too fast, heavy exertion after a meal, to various stomach viruses. But here are some simple tips to stop the cycle of vomiting and get your child feeling better.
Do not give anything by mouth for 30 minutes after vomiting; it is okay to allow your child to rinse and spit water or mouth wash to clear the bad taste in their mouth;
Restart oral intake with clear liquids, if tolerating clear liquids for one hour, may increase diet to soft foods, then regular foods incrementally over the next 24 hours.
Avoid dairy products, especially if your child has a fever.
If vomiting restarts, withhold oral intake for another 30 minutes and repeat the steps above.
If your child is tolerating a regular diet, they are fever free, and have not vomited in 24 hours, they can return to school.
